del mar — Amanda Dickerson didn’t grow up dreaming about driving a bus. She fell into the job years ago and has relied on the steady work to pay her bills ever since.



But the 31-year-old Lakeside woman is determined to become her own boss, in charge of her own time and managing her own business.



Dickerson took her first step toward self-reliance Saturday at the Work at Home Business Expo, where she invested $75 in a starter kit to become a Mary Kay Cosmetics representative.



“I just wanted to find something that interested me,” she said. “I’m at work 12 hours, and that’s a long day, a long week. Hopefully this will give me more time to spend with my family.Find a great selection of christian louboutin boots deals !”



Dickerson was one of hundreds of would-be entrepreneurs who attended the business expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, all of them on the lookout for extra income from home-based work.



According to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report in 2010, there are approximately 18.3 million home-based businesses across the country, which represents about half of all American businesses.



“Technology allows individuals and small groups to compete with large corporations,” said Derek Romo, who organized the exposition.



Romo said his events have boomed in popularity since the economy soured in 2008.



“The latest recession is just a current reminder that no job is 100 percent secure,” he said. “A lot of people are looking to ensure their retirement and financial well-being with alternative revenue streams.”



Dennis Bell of City Heights launched his own business selling Miche handbags — women’s purses with changeable covers — four years ago. He was at the expo Saturday recruiting new sales representatives.

Rasheeda Stokes is a sergeant in the Marine Corps stationed at Camp Pendleton. Her enlistment is up next year, and she is already thinking about what kind of business she wants to start.

Not everyone who attended the expo was there to launch a business. Some of them, like David Sanchez of Lemon Grove, were looking for ways to grow their own businesses.



Sanchez said he may have found it in a specialty greeting-card enterprise.



“You have to be more innovative, and you have to be more creative,” said Sanchez, who is a consultant for small-business owners. “Everybody is trying to stand out, and with these (greeting cards) you can simplify communications with your customers.”
